April 2010

Welcome to the Gürze eNews!

Greetings from Morro Bay! Leigh and I have been hard at work on the (sixth!) revision of our original Bulimia book. It's a little hard to keep our noses to the grindstone when the beach is only a block away, but we have been taking "recess" every now and then for walks or bike rides to Morro Rock (see photo).

We have a new strategy for editing together: two screens and keyboards with the same file, so we can work on the same sections simultaneously. One of us will have an idea and start typing, and the other watches while the sentences form, and then vice versa. It's a far cry from the IBM Selectric typewriter we used for the first edition!

Since we last revised it ten years ago, a lot has changed, yet much has remained the same. There have been hundreds of studies and many are contradictory. There are advancements in the area of genetics and biochemistry, as well as a variety of new treatment approaches, but recovery still depends on the dedication and commitment of the individual.

In the early days, I wanted to change the world and end eating disorders completely. But over the past 30 years, I have learned that systemic change still happens one person at a time, from the ripples of hope and inspiration that flow from individual recovery. I can only hope that our book, once we finally get it done (!) continues to make a difference.

Blessings,
Lindsey

Affirmations are like little reminder notes to your inner self—a way to gently direct the mind towards the wisdom of the heart. A young woman named Katy Bertrand, who is in recovery from bulimia, wrote the following affirmations. Katy is 26 and lives in California. She likes to spend time doing things that are creative, like writing songs and poetry.

Katy writes, "When creating these affirmations I was thinking about times when I struggle with ED urges, times when I feel vulnerable and am maybe not thinking as clearly as I'd like. I wanted to have positive words ready for encouragement and reassurance. I know that pausing, just for a moment, and reminding myself of my own self worth—and the importance of my recovery—can make all the difference in resisting urges. At those times, when it seems like Ed's voice is so loud and persistent, I wanted words that were stronger and more powerful."

  • When I have feelings that need to be released, I choose to "purge" on paper by journaling.
  • I use my ED urges as indications of my deeper emotional needs. Then I meet those needs in emotionally healthy ways.
  • Feelings are not bad or dangerous. It is actions that can be detrimental or destructive.
  • When I am experiencing strong emotions, I remind myself that thoughts, feelings, and urges change. I will not feel this way forever.
  • I have a unique identity, separate from Ed. I am not my ED.
  • When I feel like I can't be kind to myself I choose to do it for the little girl inside.
  • I ask myself, "Is this a step toward, or away from, recovery?" Then I choose recovery. Recovery matters because I matter.
