Finding Your Voice

Happy almost NEDAW everyone!

By now I hope you've gotten your 2010 catalogue and love the gingkos on the cover as much as I do. As always, I welcome feedback, suggestions, and orders for more click here.

This eNews features an article about "The Future of the Intuitive Eating Movement," by the always-interesting Karen Koenig, author of The Rules of Normal Eating and The Food and Feelings Workbook.

Leigh tells me our bloggers have been busy this month, one posting almost every day. Check out the homepage here

Next up is the iaedp conference in Orlando in March. (See below for a $50 discount for readers of this newsletter who register.) I'm going to be there in support of our newest authors who are giving a presentation and debuting their book, Finding Your Voice through Creativity, The Art and Journaling Workbook for Eating Disorders (you can preorder the book here). I've been editing this book for the past year. Having "sewed myself well" by making literally thousands of Gürze dolls in my early recovery, I am totally in love with its message: Creativity connects us to the inner voice; healing occurs when we listen. (BTW, I'm going to bring a doll to the conference to give away.)

Michelle Lelwica, author of The Religion of Thinness, will also be speaking, as will Anita Johnston, author of Eating in the Light of the Moon, and Judy Rabinor, author of A Starving Madness. It's going to be a great conference. For more info click here

One last item: Your responses to our catalogs are always welcome. Of course, we are happy when you write or call to tell us how much you love the cover photo or book choices. But this year, we also got calls about the white cover "wrap" from people who felt it was too revealing ("the postman might discover my secret") and from those who felt it was not revealing enough ("no one should be ashamed of having an ED"). Both these responses are completely valid, but in their own ways, they highlight the stigma attached to having an eating disorder. May all our efforts during NEDAW enlighten and inspire!

The Future of the Intuitive Eating Movement
By Karen R. Koenig, LCSW, M.Ed

"As a recovering chronic dieter, binge-eater, therapist, educator and author, I've been part of the movement toward saner/intuitive/"normal" eating for over 30 years, and wonder what would have happened if I hadn't stumbled upon Susie Orbach's Fat is a Feminist Issue. Back in the late 70s when the non-diet movement began as a ripple, it's easy to see how it could have passed people by. To this day, I have no idea how I lucked onto Orbach's book, but I'm eternally grateful that I did!" READ MORE

   Inspirational Corner

"An eating disorder can set up a negative loop of thoughts in peoples' minds. It is one way that the illness maintains control. By looking for a daily miracle or focusing on a positive thought, a new loop can be set up. This loop of thoughts can encourage you rather than scold you. It can inspire you rather than inhibit you... this new pattern of thoughts can offer hope, rather than make you feel helpless. The question is whether you can slow down, look around, and find those tiny miracles."

— Martha Peaslee Levine, Your Write to Health
