June 2010

Welcome to the Gürze eNews!

Dear Readers,

For those of you who aren't following Gürze on Facebook, here's a photo of Señora le Pew (wife of Pepe) who was (temporarily) living in our back yard with her two kids. And here's one of me in my usual black-and-white attire—clearly the reason the le Pew's felt so at home. Silliness aside, I do the Facebook posts and these newsletters because I want to feel connected to the recovery community and to give my support to those who are struggling. The act of sharing with others makes me feel part of a larger healing circle—nourishment of a sort. I hope you are part of a circle, group, or network that "feeds" you, as well.

Since summer is just around the corner, this issue of the eNews features three books on body image. Two are workbooks, and one is a book of photographs that celebrates female nudes of all sizes, shapes, and ages. If you've been thinking about addressing your relationship with your body, as well as with food, I hope these will support and inspire.

Also in this issue is Karen Koenig's book review of Finding Your Voice through Creativity. She liked it—a lot!

Finally, I want to remind you that I am accepting, editing, and posting inspirational articles, poetry, and artwork for individuals and families in recovery at EatingDisordersReview.com. Here's the latest article from Canada about a very important, yet overlooked topic: Anorexia Nervosa in the Elderly.

As always, a huge thank you to everyone who gives out Gürze resource catalogues. If you need more, let us know! Your support and encouragement keep us going.

Happy (almost) Summer,

Lindsey

Karen Koenig reviews Finding Your Voice Through Creativity: The Art and Journaling Workbook for Disordered Eating:

"This workbook gently teaches you about what is wrong in your life and how to right it. Through drawing and journaling, you'll begin to understand yourself from the inside out. Both art and writing serve as a kind of play—where anything goes and no one is judging you—that will lead you more deeply into the issues that plague you and cause your unhealthy relationship with food. "Play" is crucial for disregulated eaters who have difficulty letting go, staying in the moment, and authentically being themselves... READ MORE.

Excerpt from the book This is Who I Am by Rosanne Olson

"We learn very early in life that beauty has a mysterious power. For years I thought that I wanted others to find me beautiful, but what I really wanted all along was to find myself beautiful. What I didn't realize is that there isn't one kind of beauty. There isn't one person or group of people that possesses the monopoly on beauty. There isn't one face, body, hair, eye, or skin color that is the definition of beauty. Now I know there's an infinite amount of beauty—it can be found in the way a person moves, a well-sculpted arm, a graceful neck, lustrous hair, compassionate eyes, hardworking hands, a soothing voice, an enthusiastic heart. It's a powerful homecoming when we can hold our own gaze in the mirror, like what we see, and don't flick our eyes away from what is reflected back to us. I finally have found that."
