The Bench
by Anne Edwards

I know the journey is hard.
There's a bench just up ahead
Under some trees.
Let's sit down,
Stop for a while.
We don't have to talk
Unless you want to.
We can listen to the birds sing,
Feel the wind,
Enjoy the view,
And see,
Really see
The life that's out there for us.
Then,
When we are both ready,
We can continue
Our journey of recovery.
I know it has its bumps
And steep hills,
But it also has its
Easier, smoother valleys and vistas.
The most important thing,
My friend,
Is that we not travel it alone.
It is a journey meant to be taken
Hand in hand.
Take mine.

Finding Your Voice

Dear Hearts,

I just returned from the IAEDP conference in Orlando, which was exciting, inspiring, and exhausting all at once. "Exciting" because our newest book, Finding Your Voice through Creativity: The Art and Journaling Workbook for Disordered Eating, made its debut and was the best seller of the entire conference! "Inspiring" because this 25th anniversary conference had particularly interesting topics, speakers, and truly committed participants from all over the world. "Exhausting" because I traveled 3,000 miles to get there, worked 13-hour days, and smiled for 3 days straight! I'm too old for this(!), although on the last day, I turned into a kid and treated myself to the fireworks at Disney World.

Next up, Leigh and I are going to our beloved Morro Bay to intensely work on a 25th anniversary edition of our original book, Bulimia: A Guide to Recovery. If you can imagine, it's now been 30 years since I recovered, and 10 years since that book's last update. So it's time. Our goal is to expand on many topics including: spirituality in recovery, advances in treatment, the distinction between "recovering" and "recovered" (a hot topic at IAEDP), and the idea of an eating disorder as teacher and guide. If anyone out there has other suggestions, feel free to get in touch with me. Lindsey@gurze.net.

Much love,
Lindsey

— Excerpt from the new book, Finding Your Voice through Creativity:

"How do we know what our needs are and how to meet them? A good way to start is by understanding that emotional needs are directly connected to our feelings. We long for emotional security, and when family and friends love and care for us, we feel safe. We yearn to be accepted by others, and if we aren't, we feel sad. We want to feel confident, and if we can't master the task, we feel anxious.

In this way, we can use our feelings as guides by tracing them back to their source. We can tune into ourselves and ask, "What am I feeling right now? And what is the hunger that underlies that feeling?" Asking these questions and listening for the answers is another way to connect with the wisdom of your inner voice."
