Dear Friends,

Last week, I happened to be in Colorado and took the opportunity to visit the Gürze Books fulfillment warehouse in Ft. Collins. Here is a picture of me with Alan (we call him Santa for obvious reasons), who is in charge of our inventory and seems to know as much about our books as we do!

After seeing everything in person, I decided that we should have a different kind of Summer Sale this year—more extensive, with more variety, and a 50% discount on lots of selected items. The sale will extend through the entire 3 months of summer, as long as copies last.

Have a great summer,
Lindsey Cohn

The Eating Disorder Center of Denver is the only facility in Colorado that offers partial hospitalization while providing the best of conventional and integrative therapies.  The center treats male and female patients, 16 years and older, and family members affected by anorexia, bulimia and binge eating.  The partial hospitalization program provides comprehensive treatment on an outpatient basis, 7 days a week, 11 hours a day.  The center also offers an evening intensive outpatient program three days a week, 4 hours a day, and outpatient services/aftercare for those patients who do not require a more intensive treatment program.

Working together, our clinicians create specialized treatment plans that fit each patient’s physical, emotional, social, spiritual and nutritional needs.  Patients learn to practice and internalize recovery skills until they can incorporate these behaviors into their way of life.  For more information or to schedule a complimentary assessment, call 866.771.0861 or visit the center's web site at www.edcdenver.com.

Speaking From Your Heart
Tony Paulson, author of  “Your Role in a Loved One’s Recovery” on EatingDisordersBlogs.com

Families often ask me how they should be responding to their loved one and his or her eating disorder. They are concerned about saying the wrong thing and making the eating disorder worse, and as a result they often remain silent when in actuality they have a lot to say. They are worried, sad, mad, frustrated and feel helpless. Family members feel that they can only be silent observers as the eating disorder takes over more of their loved one's life.

Silence is not the answer. However, how you communicate your concerns to your loved one is important. Reasoning with the eating disorder or using logic to try to understand it will only lead to more confusion and frustration. The eating disorder lives in your loved one's head. An eating disorder is comprised of negative thoughts that the person has a hard time ignoring. Thus, fighting it on that level seldom yields the intended results. Your loved one believes the negative thoughts, and any contrary information is ignored or distorted to fit his or her negative belief system.

However, speaking from your heart to your loved one's heart bypasses the eating disorder and is an effective way of communicating and staying connected to the sufferer through the struggles of the eating disorder. Communicating your love and your commitment to stand by your loved one throughout the recovery process is essential. Remember, they are as scared as you are. They may not admit it, but it is the truth. He or she does not want to live the life the eating disorder offers but does not feel there is any alternative. They are watching this happen as you are. Thus, coming together, committing to walk the path to recovery together provides your loved one a sense they are not alone.
